Issue 142 Designer for the Day

What we love most about this issue’s Designer of the Day, Afia Choudhury – aside from the fact she made this beautiful card from materials won in our giveaway! – is her passion and enthusiasm for all things crafts. Afia managed to use simplistic washi tapes to full effect with her vibrant floral card which you too can learn how to make.

You will need:
Craft essentials
Envelope 4 x 6
Watercolour card
Washi tape: blue, pink and orange
Altenew Perfectly Perfect Stamp set
Hero Arts Ombre Ink pads: Butter Bar to Orange Soda, Soft Sky to Indigo, Light to Dark Peach
Black watercolour
Gelly Roll Gel pen: gold
Cosmic Shimmer Coloured Pearlescent PVA: Cobalt Blue

Method:
1. Prepare the base card by taping down the washi tapes to create stripes leaving gaps in-between showing the white card. TIP: Place your card on your mat aligned with the grid lines to help with sticking the washi tapes straight across the card.
2. Cut the washi tape a little excess than the card and fold over and under the card for a neat finish.
3. Create some splashes on the card with black watercolour. Leave aside to dry. TIP: Large brushes create large splashes, small brushes create small splashes.
4. Using a plastic package, press the ink pad on the package, spray some water on the ink before it dries and press the watercolour card down to pick up the colours. Do this until satisfied with the ink layers and texture. Leave to dry or you can use a heat tool. I used Soft Sky to Indigo for the leaves and Butter Bar to Soda and Light to Dark Peach for the flowers.
5. Stamp your floral images over the dried ink and fussy cut them out (or use coordinating dies). Give some outlines using the gold gel pen on the flowers.
6. Before arranging the fussy cuttings, stamp the sentiment on the bottom right.
7. Arrange the flowers and leaves until satisfied with the layout. Stick them down with foam tapes.
8. Embellish the card with drops of the Cosmic Shimmer in various sizes. Your card is complete.
9. Finally, stamp a flower on the bottom left of the envelope. Stamp anther flower on a post it, fussy cut the image, mask the flower on the envelope and stamp the leaves. Remove the masking. The envelope is ready.
