Medium mix-up
Colette recommends experimenting with different colouring mediums. Alcohol markers are a good start, particularly for beginners. They will give your cards a bold and vibrant look. If you’re after softer results, watercolours work well, and some dye-based inks can offer the same effect. If you’re careful, you can apply watercolours to printed images without the lines blurring, just don’t oversaturate with liquid.

Sentiment play
You can either make your sentiment the focal point on your card like Colette’s ‘summer fun’ card or you can opt for a smaller sentiment to accompany the main motif. A smaller phrase or greeting doesn’t have to be low-key, however. You can still make it eye-catching by colouring in the word, layering onto coloured card or snipping it into an interesting shape as Colette proves with her speech bubble ‘cheers!’ card.

Marker magic
If you can’t find patterned papers to suit your project, use alcohol markers to create your own. You might not be able to tell but the plaid background on Colette’s ‘Hey girl!’ card has been created using alcohol markers alone. Yep, we thought it was patterned paper too! Choose a combination of three to four colours, then alternate between the thick and thin edges of your markers to achieve the pattern. Chisel-tipped pens work well for this technique.

Happy Camper
Print and colour in the caravan motif, then cut out. Cover a 13cm square blank with cream card. Die cut an 11.5cm circle from blue heart paper and glue towards the top of the card front. Snip a wavy section from pale green card so it fits over the lower half of the circle. Fix the caravan to the right. Print and die cut a sentiment into an oval, then mount onto pale green card. Attach to the top-left of the card.

Summer Sentiment
Print out the ‘Summer fun’ sentiment. Colour in the top of the lettering to look like chocolate ice cream and the base to look like wafer. Colour in the sprinkles and ‘Fun’ in pink. Glue the sentiment towards the top of an 11cm x 14cm top-folding blank. Die cut a scallop-edged border across the top of a strip of brown card. Run along the bottom of the card, trimming any excess. Wrap pink baker’s twine around the brown panel and tie into a bow. Use the Sakura Gelly Roll Clear Glaze pen to embellish the sprinkles.

Slimline Watermelon Card
Print the melon slice three times and colour in with green and pink dye inks. Punch a small hole in the top corners of each slice. Mount blue card onto a 9cm x 17cm white blank. Thread black baker’s twine through the holes, add foam tape to the back of each slice and arrange onto the blank. Print and colour in a sentiment, trim and matt onto blue card. Finish with silver sequins.

Cocktail Card
Print, colour and cut out the cocktail motif. Print out a sentiment onto white card and snip into a speech bubble shape. Stencil a lattice design onto white card, 8.5cm x 14.5cm, using blue distress oxide ink. Mount onto a white blank. Add the cocktail and sentiment to the card front to finish.

Inked Plaid Background
Print out the girl motif, colour in and cut out. Print out a sentiment and trim. Create a plaid background with alcohol markers, trim to 10.5cm x 13.5cm and matt onto a white blank. Fix the girl to the top of the card with the sentiment underneath.
